MONTGOMERY — Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney leads Democratic President Barack Obama in the race for Alabama’s nine electoral votes, according to poll results released Friday. Asked for whom they would vote for president now, 51.3 percent of the surveyed Alabama voters said Romney, 36.4 percent said Obama and 12.3 percent said they didn’t know or didn’t reply. The margin of error was plus or minus 4.2 percent.

The statewide telephone poll by the Capital Survey Research Center, the polling arm of the Alabama Education Association teachers’ lobby, surveyed 551 Alabama voters who said they likely would vote in the Nov. 6 general election. They were called June 7, June 18-19 and June 26-27.

Alabama in recent decades has favored Republicans for president.

Polling center director Gerald Johnson said he had expected Romney to fare better than he did in the poll. ”I thought he would be stronger than he is,” Johnson said.

The poll also showed that more surveyed voters had an unfavorable impression of Obama than Romney.

Asked their impression of Obama, 41 percent said it was favorable, 49.4 percent said it was unfavorable, 6.2 percent were neutral and the rest said they didn’t know or didn’t reply.

Asked their impression of Romney, 47.2 percent of the surveyed voters said it was favorable, 34.6 percent said it was unfavorable, 8.7 percent were neutral, 1.6 percent said they didn’t recognize the name and the rest said they didn’t know or didn’t reply.
