Reporters covering Mitt Romney Wednesday experienced an extra dose of adventure complete with nerve-wracking high-speed rides, an Orthodox Jewish wedding and attempted fence-scaling.
“Some unusual things happened,” pool reporter Holly Bailey of Yahoo News reported.
Romney arrived Wednesday afternoon at Lake Terrace in Lakewood, N.J., for a fundraiser after managing to shorten a 61-minute drive into a 45-minute trip thanks to speeds pushing 90 mph. The journey “prompted your pooler to wonder many times if she would live to cover Romney’s remarks at the fundraiser tonight.”
In Lakewood, the motorcade first encountered a man wearing American flag shorts running towards the presidential candidate waving an American flag. “‘Whooooo!’ he exclaimed, as your pooler’s van passed.” Then, a family abandoned the bride and groom of an Orthodox Jewish wedding party mid-photo shoot to chase the presidential candidate’s car. “At least 10 members of the wedding party” tried to reach Romney, with one man going so far as to attempt to scale a wood fence. They were stopped by Secret Service.
“‘Oh you’re Secret Service,’ one woman said, as she was asked by an agent to move back. ‘We just want to see Romney,’” according to the pool report.
“Per spokesman Rick Gorka, Romney is going to pose for photos with the wedding party.” The press pool was not permitted to observe.
